These Old Coats

Heavy old coats

On my back

Started out with good intentions

Warmth, comfort

A heavy price paid for warmth

Still, it was better than the cold

Which would have annihilated me

Old coats, a slower death

Hiding, protecting the unspoken

The unknown and the forgotten

The little holes in the worn fabric

Like antennae

Scoping the air

For the first sign of spring

To breathe in the hope for something new.

Approach to Therapy

Therapy is a way to get in touch with parts of yourself that are disconnected. Psychiatrist DW Winnicott described disconnection in terms of a true and false self. As we grow up, we learn to adapt to our environment and our caregivers in order to maintain a relationship. We may keep our thoughts and emotions to ourselves, because to express them might mean abandonment. Eventually you reach a point when this is not working so well in your life. Core beliefs and patterns of relating have developed over time. And for many of us, these core beliefs, ways of being in relationship to ourselves and others became soft wired, but feel hard wired, and we became who we thought we were supposed to be.  And these beliefs become “written in stone” in our minds.  These early ways of adapting to our environment and the important people in this matrix began to solidify into ways of being, and became patterns of relating in all circumstances, regardless of context.

Therapy offers an opportunity to find new and improved ways of relating to yourself and others, and emerge with a more authentic sense of self. You are coming into therapy likely because there is something you can't work out and you need help from someone else. Working together can be very healing. It is important that you feel you are in a safe environment, where you will be able to express your thoughts and feelings without feeling impinged upon.  Whether it be about relationships, trauma, life transitions, stress related to the past or present, I will help you in your pursuit of living of living your life to the fullest.  You deserve to feel fulfilled in life, and be accepted for who you are, not who someone else wants you to be. We can find out what you desire for your life, help you trust your intuition, integrate the physical, emotional and spiritual parts of yourself, and connect to yourself in a new enlivening way.
